mapping who holds us
The nod across the street says: I see you. You're not out here alone. This is the nod made visible — Black queer men taking an honest look at who is actually in our skies.
Loneliness isn't a personal failure. It's a position in a web — and webs can be redrawn. That's why BLKOUT exists. But to redraw the web we first have to look at it: which connections are scarce, for whom, and how many of us are one introduction away from the connection we want.
Constellations is BLKOUT community research. It runs at our gatherings, with your people, or right here — and it works the same way everywhere: you map your sky, you keep the map.
ten quiet minutes. paper if you can — it remembers better.
Ring 1 — the 3am people
Who could you call at 3am — and it would be okay that you called? Mark each one as a star. Initials, symbols, whatever you like.
Ring 2 — the regulars
Who do you actually see, or properly speak to, most months? The brunch people, the gym people, the long phone calls.
Ring 3 — the nods
Who knows your face and wishes you well? The barber, the neighbour, the men at the function whose names you half know. They count. They're the outer light.
The gold ring
Now the part that's about what's next, not what's now. Who do you want closer? Someone you'd move inward — or an empty space you want filled: a workout partner · someone who knew me before · anyone within twenty minutes of my house. Draw the star where you want it to be.
There's no good or bad sky. This is a map, not a mark scheme.
how your sky counts — without anyone reading your life.
Count your stars in each ring and leave the numbers. That's it. Every card sharpens the picture of what connection looks like for Black queer men in the UK — and what BLKOUT should build next. Optional, always.
Card received. Thank you.
Now look at your map before you fold it away. Every star on it is someone who'd probably be glad to know they're there.
The homework — if you want homework — is to tell one of them this week.
constellations travels — a brunch, a crew, an organisation.
The full exercise is designed for a room: fifty minutes, pairs, gold pens, a box for the cards, food already on the table. Everything you need is in the kit. One thing is non-negotiable: the consent script gets read word for word. The promise is the exercise.

If your first ring felt empty tonight — you're not the only one, and that's exactly what this research exists to change. Better with company: do this with a friend, or bring it to a gathering. The map is the start of something, not a verdict on anything.
